Dr. Michael Osei Adu is a Crop Improvement and Ecophysiology Scientist and an Associate Professor with the Department of Crop Science, School of Agriculture, University of Cape Coast, Ghana (UCC). Before joining UCC’s faculty, Michael was a Duke of Edinburgh Scholar during his Master’s in Crop Improvement at the University of Nottingham in the United Kingdom. He also held the prestigious Vice Chancellor’s Scholarship for Research Excellence for his PhD in Plant Sciences at the University of Nottingham and the James Hutton Institute, United Kingdom, from 2010 to 2014. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture from the University of Cape Coast, Ghana. He is a professional teacher with a Post-secondary Teachers’ Certificate from the Presbyterian Training College, Akropong-Akuapem. Michael’s research focuses on the ecophysiology of crop plants’ abiotic (drought, nutrients and heat) stress tolerance, crop improvement, climate change adaptation of agri-food systems and food security. He also has interests and expertise in agricultural research synthesis, particularly in applying meta-analysis and systematic reviews for impact assessment of agricultural research and food security studies. He has expertise in policy engagement and has had close to 10 years of experience in teaching, research and outreach. He has over 40 publications, with critical publications on plant root growth dynamics, the role of root system architecture in soil resource uptake and evidence syntheses with systematic reviews and meta-analyses. He is a regular speaker at scientific conferences and a sought-after reviewer for high-impact journals. He serves as an Editor of reputable scientific journals, including Associate Editor for Plant Phenomics, a Science Partner Journal of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and Frontiers in Agronomy. Michael provides research, advisory and consultancy services and has previously consulted for national and international organizations, including the Ghana Ministry of Food and Agriculture, the Ghana Statistical Service and the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR).
